The Georgia Center for Humane Education will help make one’s trash another’s treasure at their inaugural mingle at the marketplace event from July 28 to 30 at Dunwoody Village Shopping Center.
During those dates, residents will be able to sift through combination new and used items such as jewelry, picture frames, books, boxes and odds and ends.
“We’re going to have quite a few Christmas items and vintage finds as well,” said Debra Berger, the group’s program director.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the organization’s mission of offering humane animal education to children.
The marketplace idea was sparked by a decision to make use of previously donated items.
“One of our generous donors was cleaning out her home and she donated a great deal of items to us,” said Berger. We decided to add other items that had already been donated to us from auctions and make a marketplace of a variety of items.”
Berger sought the location because of her own familiarity.
“I live near Dunwoody,” she said. “[The Dunwoody Village Shopping Center] is my favorite shopping center. I shop here all the time.”
Berger added that she noticed there were empty spaces and thought the location would be convenient and accessible.
In addition to offering a selection of items, further information about their cause will be given to attendees.
“We’re a central resource for humane education in Atlanta,” said Judy Landey, humane educator and spokesperson for the organization. “We try to generate humane awareness and safety to schools and organizations.”
One such school in DeKalb is Oakcliff Traditional Theme school, which both Berger and Landey said was their pilot school.
Berger and Landey have also worked with Camp Isidore Alterman out of the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta and Hands for Hire in the county.
“We hope that the community learns more about our work and how we do our work,” said Berger. “We’re trying to find ways to deliver our programs.”
The marketplace will be at the Dunwoody Village Shopping Center, 1317 Dunwoody Village Parkway, next to Calico Corners.
Hours for the marketplace are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 28 and 29.
On July 30, the hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Items for donation to the sale will be accepted on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the site of the sale.
