Decatur resident Mary Stacy loves her feline friends – so much so she found a way to include them in her professional life.
As a freelance buyer for set dressers at production companies, Stacy seeks out movies props, including pictures. Her work has been featured in the movies “Glory,” “Remember the Titans,” and “For Colored Girls.”
“I’m the eyes and ears of someone who is decorating,” she said. “I put everything together.”
When a homey touch is needed, Stacy often uses pictures of her own pets instead of purchasing stock images.
Her cat, Jack Hollis, has appeared in numerous movies and television shows, including Atlantan Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes to Jail.”
“Jack’s picture was used as a picture on the wall in an attorney’s office in the movie,” Stacy said.
If it wasn’t for the DeKalb nonprofit Furkids, Stacy would not have found Jack, she said.
Furkids, an animal rescue shelter, markets animals for adoption through retailers like Petsmart.
The organization offers refuge for abandoned and homeless animals and provides low-cost options for spaying and neutering.
“We rescue just under 1,000 animals a year,” said Samantha Shelton, Furkids’ executive director. “We have placed more than 6,000 animals into homes in the past nine years.”
Stacy bonded with Jack from the beginning.
“We became fast friends,” she said. “I learned immediately that he was very, very shy, just like some people can be when they don’t know someone that well.”
Stacy’s experience led her to adopt another cat, Elizabeth Laird, who might have her own chance at film or television stardom.
“I named her Elizabeth because I’ve always loved the name,” she said. “Her last name was my mother’s maiden name.”
Stacy is grateful for the organization and the new family members she has gained.
“I’m just glad I have Furkids in my life,” she said.
