Tucker resident Daniel Cook stands near his proposal for the Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Daniel Cook received some exciting news earlier this month.
The Tucker resident and professional architect placed first in a contest to design a memorial commemorating President Dwight Eisenhower in Washington, D.C.
“I entered the competition on my own seeing it as a wonderful exercise in the classical architecture and a chance to test my drafting, rendering and design abilities,” said Cook in an email to the Neighbor.
The contest was sponsored by the National Civic Art Society and the Institute for Classical Architecture and Classical America’s Mid Atlantic chapter.
Frank Gehry was originally selected to design the memorial through another competition, but his proposal met controversy.
The National Civic Art Society then launched a separate competition to counteract the controversy. Some features of Cook’s submission include an Eisenhower arch with the words “Peace through understanding,” formal fountains and several statues.
“I sought to create a simple, yet elegant memorial to honor President Eisenhower,” said Cook.
“As many architects before me, I looked to the ancients as well as to our founding fathers for inspiration.”
Cook also received a $1,000 prize for his submission.
Submissions were accepted from students and professionals architects until May 6.
Cook’s rendering of the submission will be displayed across Washington, D.C. for the next year.
The memorial is scheduled to be constructed over a five year period, with a Memorial Day 2015 tentative dedication.
